>>I dont think it matters any more what Turkey does/does not do.<<
Interesting link to keep track of what's going on the Turkish press: turkishpress.com
The Cyprus thing is going to keep them out of the EU, anyway, apparently (they are accused of occupying the territory of another EU member, as well as flouting the UN), along with the finding by the European Union Human Rights commission that the trial of PKK leader Abdulla Ocallan violated his human rights.
It appears to me that they are having a very hard time figuring out what to do about the Kurds in Northern Iraq. My sense is that they would like very much to invade Northern Iraq without the US, but the Kurds won't let them, and we won't let them, so next best is that we let them in along with us and promise to protect them, but we won't do that unless they give us assurances that they don't want to give us. They really, really want Northern Iraq or at least part of it, and are having a hard time accepting that they can't have it. Just a guess on my part.
And then the realists understand that they might get worse than nothing, because anybody that doesn't help us will be excluded from civil government when the war is over, and we aren't assuring them that the Turkmen in Iraq will be represented, either. |
