"If it were not for the strong support of the Jewish community for this war with Iraq we would not be doing this,"..."The leaders of the Jewish community are influential enough that they could change the direction of where this is going and I think they should."

""By no means did I intend or believe that members of the Jewish community are united in their support for a possible war with Iraq,"..."And I certainly never meant, nor do I believe, to imply that the Jewish community is responsible for or should be blamed for this war."

He does not believe that the Jewish community is united in their support for a war with Iraq.

He does not believe that the Jewish community is responsible for the war.

He does not believe that the Jewish community should be blamed for the war.

Apparently he understands the connection between American and Jewish interests in terms of being allies...and in terms of the Jewish Nation being in a very vulnerable state. He seems to believe that the vulnerability of Israel coupled with Her relationship with the US through friendship and contract assigns a special influence to Jewish leaders. He is undoubtedly correct in this belief.

He is also clearly a passionate proponent of peace and has appealed to the Jewish leadership to cast their influence in that direction. Does he overestimate their ability? I don't know. Right now Israel is the most important Nation in the world to US interests. But to consider that Israel would not look after her self interests (which would best be served by disarming Iraq), in favour of an effervescent "peace" is at the best gullible.

There is no basis in his comments and subsequent apologies to justify a charge of racism. There may be justification for the accusation of being emotionally raw and intellectually clumsy...
