Jacob, I dont disagree with the quotes below from iranians. They are hard headed balance of power conclusions by seemingly reasonble men. Call me crazy. If iran becomes a democracy, i would have no objection to them obtaining nukes. Israel does need to be balanced. Sharon and post Sharon out of control is not a pretty thought. And of course an iranian bomb will make the arab states more secure and will aid in their signing a deal with Israel as well. And of course democracies dont go to war, with each other. Same with Russia who Iran has always feared. Nukes for peace?? Believing in disarmament maybe the post nuclear world will have former adversaries disarming together--iran/russia/israel; india/pakistan. None of this can happen of course without firm committments from USA and China to disarm soon thereafter. mike
"It's basically a matter of equilibrium," said Mostafa Tajzadeh, a leading theorist in the reform movement that controls Iran's parliament. "On the one hand Israel says, 'If I don't have it, I don't have security.' And we say, 'As long as Israel has it, we don't have security."
"Iran is a unique country," said Sayed Asadullah Maryan, an adviser to the Defense Ministry. "No country in the region has our history and culture and civilization. If the Americans understood us, they would know, as with India and Pakistan, how difficult it is to live under the nuclear shadow of Russia and the nuclear shadow of Israel." |
