Samsung Narrows Gap with Nokia, Motorola in Mobile Phone Handsets

March 13, 2003 (SEOUL) -- Samsung Electronics Co, Ltd, the world's third-ranking maker of mobile phone handsets, narrowed the gap with Nokia Corp and Motorola Inc in the fourth quarter after introducing handsets with color screens and cameras, Gartner Inc said.

Samsung's market share rose to 9.5% from 7.9% in the year-earlier quarter, Gartner said.

On the other hand, Nokia kept its market share little changed at 36.8% in the fourth quarter, while runner-up Motorola increased its share to 15.6% from 14.7%.

The top five makers of handsets raised their lead over smaller rivals, increasing their combined market share to 76% from 73%.
