What if being for the support of Israel puts the US at risk? I don't think the survival of Israel is really our priority in this country.

X, I do not see how the US could in good conscience not support Israel. First of all, we were party to the creation of the country, for better or worse; we've always supported it; so we have a responsibility to continue to support it. Secondly, there are lots of Americans, probably a majority of Americans, who have a special interest in the place. And thirdly, it's a democracy in a part of the world where that's an alien concept.

That is not to say that we have to rubber-stamp Israel's policies. Or pay for them. I think it's a fine idea, for example, to make our aid payments inversely proportional to their nurturing of settlements. We don't need to support Israeli policies that increase our risk. But the bottom line is, IMO, that we have to defend the existence of the country, despite the risk.
