Well, I will step back here, and note that what we call democracy actually is a "mixed regime" calculated to thwart demogogic passions. Perhaps a pure democracy would not last, though there is no good empirical test of that. Athens did not fall primarily due to class divisions, but due to conquest, for example. It was still pretty magnificent when Alexander took over. Rome did not cease to be a republic because the people raided the treasury, but because it required peace to flourish as a commercial power, and took it upon itself to impose it, and to extend its reach. Even Rome was really a patriciate more than a democracy, albeit with some plebeian officials. The Senate was wholly patrician.
