Well put, Jacob. That describes the citizenry to a large degree, as does the notion that they just don't like the experience of a greater power waging war with a lesser power because they've felt it firsthand.

Were there a way to accomplish regime change without the enormous risks to the population of Baghdad, I think the French opposition would soften a lot.

Personally, I just wish some sign of resistance from the Baathists would emerge. That the Southern Iraqis and Northern Kurds will work for regime change is apparent. But central Iraq is the big question mark. Without some sign of courage, one wonders if they support Hussein. And signs of resistance might convince antiwar folks elsewhere.
