Harris Corporation To Establish $10 Million Worldwide Digital TV Center In Cincinnati Area

[ Back to the News | Back HOME ]
CINCINNATI, Ohio, and MELBOURNE, Fla., July 29
/PRNewswire/ via Individual Inc. -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:
HRS) has announced its second major move within as many
months to strengthen its leadership in the growing worldwide
market for digital television (DTV) and radio broadcast equipment.

At a press conference this morning in Cincinnati, Ohio, Harris said
it is establishing a $10 million Worldwide Digital TV Center in the
Cincinnati area that will expand the company's engineering,
administrative and manufacturing capacity to meet the needs of
the many broadcasters converting from analog to the new digital
technology.

Harris, already the nation's leading supplier of digital television
and radio broadcast equipment, said it will build the
130,000-square-foot facility at Governor's Pointe North in
Deerfield Township, Warren County to serve as the new
headquarters for the company's worldwide broadcast operations.
All of the company's resources related to digital television,
including key product management, engineering, sales and
marketing, and selected senior administration staff will be based at
the center. The 19-acre site is large enough to accommodate
expansion that will likely be needed as the demand for digital
broadcast equipment grows in the future.

The new center ultimately will be staffed by about 250 people,
including new hires and transfers from some of the company's
other broadcast operations. Construction of the office building
should begin this fall. Final construction for the remainder of the
facility is expected to be completed by the year 2000.
Approximately 10,000 square feet of temporary office space will be
utilized during the design and construction period to house key
personnel and new hires.

The Harris Broadcast operation in Florence, Kentucky will
relocate to the new Governor's Pointe facility and some of the
administrative staff will be transferred from the division's
operations in Quincy, Illinois. However, the Quincy operation will
continue to serve as the company's primary manufacturing facility
for television and radio transmission equipment. Many of the
Broadcast Division's general administrative functions and radio
product management will also remain in Quincy.

"The new center will provide us with the industry's most
advanced facility developed specifically for the new era of digital
television and radio broadcasting," said Van Cullens, president of
Harris' Communications Sector. "The Cincinnati location gives us
access to a strong employment base and is easily accessible to
our customers with its major airport and interstate highways."

"Governor Voinovich and I are pleased that Harris Corporation
has chosen southwestern Ohio for their new Worldwide Digital
TV Center," Lt. Governor Nancy P. Hollister said. "The addition of
Harris Corporation to Cincinnati, with its high technology, skilled
workforce and advanced product line, will serve to enhance
Ohio's leadership position in the global marketplace."

The announcement is the second within the past two months
related to Harris' expansion in the digital television and broadcast
market. Earlier, Harris announced it acquired Innovation
Telecommunications Image and Sound (ITIS), a European leader
in digital broadcasting products. The acquisition enables Harris to
provide advanced digital television and radio broadcast products
that meet both the U.S. and European standards.

Harris is the leader in advanced transmitter equipment for Digital
Television (DTV) systems and the leading manufacturer of digital
radio broadcast equipment in the U.S. The company has signed
agreements to provide DTV transmitters to more than 130
television stations in the U.S. Last year, a Harris transmitter
became the first in the U.S. to broadcast commercial digital
television signals. The company also developed the test bed that
was used to evaluate all digital television systems proposed for
the U.S. market.

Harris Corporation, with worldwide sales of more than $3.8 billion,
is an international communications and electronics company that
provides a wide range of products and services such as wireless
and personal communications, digital television, health care
information, multi-media communications, automotive electronics,
transportation, business information, defense communications
and information, and Lanier office products.
