US to stay in Iraq '20-25 years': US envoy 1:11pm Fri Mar 14th, 2003 ISTANBUL — The US ambassador to Turkey hosted an elegant dinner party for Turkish lawmakers reluctant to approve US military cooperation in an Iraq war. There was classical Turkish music and salmon, costly and difficult to obtain here. Also on the menu — some diplomatic fence-mending and words that Washington intends to reorganize the region and remain in Iraq for 20 to 25 years. Ambassador Robert Pearson invited the justice minister and six members of parliament, which may vote again next week to permit 62,000 US combat troops on Turkish soil, opening a northern front in an Iraq war. The Turkish population is overwhelmingly opposed to war and opposition politicians have called the government a slave to US interests.
