Price war in foundry biz?
Is a price war looming in the silicon foundry business?

Sources believe so, given the recent actions from the startup foundries in China. Sources believe that Chinese foundry startup Semiconductor International Manufacturing Corp. (SMIC) of Shanghai has suddenly emerged as the low-cost leader in the marketplace.

SMIC is reportedly offering an 8-inch, 0.18-micron wafer with five layers of metal for as low as $1,200--or 35% below the price of the big foundries in Taiwan, sources said. SMIC is also reportedly selling a wafer for DRAM applications down to $500.
