The USS Cole was an attack by Al Qaeda on the US. This is how I characterized it. I did not label it in any other manner.

Call it whatever you want, but it does not detract in the slightest from the point:

That they have and will continue to try and attack us regardless of our actions in Iraq.

It should not be a surprise or unusal that things change after 9/11, however, a terrorist is and was best defined as one not associated with a nation state who commits violence "with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies".
