I got that "mile away" figure from the news story on this week's test of MOAB on the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer, which is not a program given to hyperbole. Perhaps the figure is inaccurate.

There has been no official word from the military on the size of the blast radius of this bomb. In any case, the radius can differ depending upon the height at which the bomb is detonated.

We are talking about a bomb that weighs 21,000 pounds (10.5 tons), and is, according to military officials, 40% more powerful than the next biggest bomb in our arsenal, the 15,000 pound "Daisy Cutter."

I did not suggest that our military commanders would use this kind of weapon in a highly populated area.
