The Purge of the Ba'ath Party Leadership - July 1979
Within a few weeks of formally taking power, having been de facto ruler of Iraq since 1968 during the nominal presidency of Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr, Saddam Hussein instituted a brutal purge of the Ba'ath Party hierarchy.
Invasion of Iran - September 1980
On 22nd September, 1980, Iraq launched a full-scale invasion of Iran. Iraq had hoped for a swift victory against its neighbour which was weakened by its recent Islamic revolution and international isolation. However, the war dragged on.
The Fayli Kurds - April 1980
On Monday 7th April 1980, the most prominent figures among the Fayli business community were invited to a 'meeting' at the Baghdad Chamber of Commerce by the Ba'athist regime.
The Anfal Offensives - 1987-1988
The Anfal was the name given to a series of eight military offensives conducted between late February to early October 1988. It was part of a systematic campaign of extermination and genocide waged against the Kurdish population of Northern Iraq between 1987-1988.
The invasion of Kuwait - August 1990
At midnight on 1st August 1990, Iraqi forces began their advance towards Kuwait. By 2nd August 1990, Iraqi forces were in full control of Kuwait City.
The Uprising of March 1991 - March 1991
Following the ceasefire of 3rd March 1991 which brought the Gulf War to an end, demonstrations began immediately in the southern cities of Basra, Najaf and Karbala, which quickly flared into open rebellion. The methods employed by the regime to put down the rebellion were ruthless. Helicopter gunships were used to dreadful effect against indiscriminate targets. |
