You want a better example? Hitler's march into the Rhineland in 1935. This was in specific violation of the Versailles Treaty that ended WW1 and that Germany signed. France and Britain had every right to move military forces in to oppose the Germans. That would have been a rational move.

They didn't. Hitler got away with it. His first big triumph. And the first indication that the democracies were soft targets.

Had they done so, things would undoubtedly come out much differently. Those German officers had sealed secret orders to retreat if they met opposition. It would have turned into a major failure for Hitler. It certainly would have weakened him, raised the influence of the German General Staff (who tended to regard him as a crazy gambler) and quite possibly led to his overthrow.

Let us then hope that the US is proceeding upon sound reason...
I can make a case either way. Which would you prefer?

One thing that bothers me is that the US assumes it is going to get a repeat of the Gulf War- -some bombing, then an armored attack, surrender, and the end of the war.

Maybe. More likely not. It is foolish to assume Saddam learned nothing from last time. The fact that he now wants to fight in the cities indicates he did. Can US military technology overcome the considerable hazards of street-by-street, block-by-block urban warfare? Does anyone actually know?
