Leader Urges Further Efforts to Prevent U.S. War on Iraq

TEHRAN TIMES POLTICIAL DESK
TEHRAN -- Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei here
on Sunday highlighted the need that regional and international efforts are
continued to prevent the outbreak of the anticipated U.S.-led war on Iraq.

Ayatollah Khamenei, in a meeting with the visiting Syrian President Bashar
al-Assad, welcomed mutual efforts to promote Tehran-Damascus cooperation in
all domains, particularly regarding the Iraq crisis, and warned that Washington
was seeking to dominate the oil reserves of the region by launching a war on Iraq.

He said the U.S. leaders are currently pursuing the ambitions of colonial powers
in the 18th century, and stated that the White House policymakers were wrong to
think that their dreams to occupy Iraq for a long time would be ever be materialized
given the prevailing world conditions.

Ayatollah Khamenei said changing the map of the Middle East region was far
beyond the abilities of the U.S., and called as "impossible" Washington's efforts to
actualize its wishes.

"The U.S. officials may for a short while inflict certain damage to the region, but the
resistance of the regional countries will eventually deal the heaviest blow to the
U.S., and will lead to the collapse of the country as a world superpower," he said.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the American menaces threatened all countries in the
region, including several of the Persian Gulf states, adding that the U.S. was
pursuing objectives beyond merely Iraq.

Whatever country helps the U.S., he cautioned, has in fact inflicted harm on itself.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution further said the overall social and economic
situation of the U.S. has largely deteriorated compared to the time the country was
at a war with Vietnam, stressing that the image of the U.S. had been already
distorted before the world public opinion. "The U.S. leaders want to deter other
nations from resisting their plans, " Ayatollah Khamenei said. "However, the
resistance of nations will eventually frustrate their efforts to achieve their sinister
goals."
