"Smart" Windows Hit the Market
Research Frontiers Incorporated has been working since 1965 to develop "switchable glazings" an innovation in the glass industry to make high performing, attractive and cost effective smart windows. After invention of an SPD (suspended particle development) film in 1991, Research Frontiers set out to build a supply chain infrastructure to make it easy to produce and distribute SPD windows and other products. The chain links specialized companies each producing a vital element: chemical emulsion supplies make the basic particles, polymers and other materials that are then processed by the SPC film coaters. After coating, SPD film is then laminated to either glass or plastic by specialized glass fabricators. Currently some twenty companies are licensed to work with the technology. In the first quarter of 2002, large scale production began by and RFI licensee, SPD, Inc., a subsidiary of Korean Hankuk Glass Industries. The factory is expanding to produce 10 million square feet of SPD film annually. ThermoView Industries, Razor's Edge Technologies, SPD Systems, Inc. and Cricursa have launched SPD-Smart architectural windows products. smartglass.com allows visitors to learn more about the technology.
