Yeah, but how many "non-rich" own enough dividend-paying stock that it really matters?

Perhaps if dividends weren't tax twice more people WOULD participate in the equity markets. If one assumes that corporate growth for the next 100 years will continue as it has over the last couple hundred, it seems reasonable to think that Americans will be better off if they put some of their money into equity rather than debt investments. This is particularly important in light of the technical insolvency of Social Security.

While there are all kinds of reasonable arguments in favor of eliminating double taxation of dividends, the idea really just seems to make sense if you want to seem American standards of living improve over time.
