I voted for Davis, because Simon was obviously unqualified. But, it is becoming apparent that the cuts in CA will be *deep*. Schools, social programs, and services will be profoundly affected.
Teachers will be laid off by the thousands. And, with the seniority rules, that means a whole layer of young teachers will be forced out. When the crisis passes, and the older teachers retire, there will be a whole missing generation of qualified teachers. It may take decades for the damage to be repaired.
Now, there is evidence that Davis hid the extent of the deficit during the campaign. By not facing the real deficit at the time, he allowed the state to continue to overspend millions. Sure enough, right after the election, he warned of a huge deficit and deep cuts. We could have started the cuts earlier, and maybe they would not have been as deep. His tactics remind me of Nixon's coverup of Watergate just prior to the elections.
Bush and Davis share a common malady: lack of statesmanship. |
