Quehubo,
It would not surprise me if the equity markets ended up today by close. The uncertainty seems gone and the polls show support for Bush. Maybe chirac's role after all was to unite the US citizenry. It is far more dangerous to short this market than go long, given the cw on the ease of victory.
Saddam now has his last chance to avert war and save his own life. And the generals have their last chance to do something proactive to prevent saddams suicide by COP choice, if that indeed his decision.
The end of the UN phase will offer other avenues of peaceful outcomes, although it would be naive to overstate such an outcome. We should move with confidence and remember the long term objectives of setting up a federated democratic iraqi state. There is no cheap or easy way to do that. And, above all, policy should remain flexible as conditions warrant. That indeed was the lesson of vietnam.
And whether one is religous or not, we should all pray for peace and for our soldiers whether to God or for our world. I think we have reached one of those "rubicons" and how we behave and whether we succeed will have ramifications for generations to come. Mike
