I submit there's no modern example of a city of 5.5 million population (possibly higher due to migrations from the northern and southern no-fly zones) being overrun militarily. The closest example is Stalingrad where two million died.

Berlin was defeated at a high cost of lives, both during and after the actual fighting. The Germans rightly feared what the Russians would do in retribution.

Paris was a different story altogether but there you have it, it can turn on the perceptions of the defeated. With Paris you also have the liberation by the Allies so in effect it was "overrun" twice. Maybe Baghdad will fall like Paris.
