Though it might sound odd, Andy Fenselau, SGI's Altix 3000 product manager, said HP's involvement is a primary reason for SGI's confidence in IPF. "They're really betting big on it. I don't think HP can let it fail," he told NewsFactor. "They've got to make it work."

Fenselau also indicated that Itanium's nonproprietary approach is attractive to SGI's customers. "A lot of our customers ... wanted a sort of standards-based open operating environment that you could only get from Itanium and Linux." The Itanium family was "the clear winner ... not just for processor architecture and performance characteristics, but the whole suite of tools around the processor and its instruction set." In addition, he said, the developer tools and compilers for the Itanium are often overlooked and underrated....
