But if the government provides us with services in exchange for the money, then that's a good thing. To me, anyway...
1) The problem, of course, is that it is a good thing to you but a bad thing to me. So, it is okay with you if the government takes MY money and uses it for things I don't approve of. In years of tax practice, I never once had a liberal come in and say, "I want to pay more taxes than what I'm required to pay".
2) Government doesn't spend money wisely. On anything. Some things (like defense, certain highway projects, etc.) can only be reasonably done by government. Everything else is better left to the private sector in my view.
On my date last night, I went to see the band Better Than Ezra... didn't like 'em much, but there was a lyric quote that I thought was apropos... "Liberal at 18, realist at 20, and then you realize, it all comes down to money..."
I've seldom met a 20 year old realist. At 20, most people have had minimal exposure to the world -- you are STARTING get doses of realism, but it is another 5-10 years before you really start to comprehend lots of stuff.
I do have a lot of respect for the fact that at your age you seem to have a keen interest in these subjects. My 22 year old daughter called me today and said, "You know what? I just heard on the radio we're going to war!".
She starts graduate school after this semester and she is no dummy. Her priorities just don't include knowing what the hell is going on in the world around her... |
