that chart was hard to read, but earnings can be subject to flim flams, dividend ratios, price to sales, price to book are better measures of fundamental value.

In 1932 most business were distressed and hanging on a thread, i don't think you could assign a realistic p/e ratio to a company at that time, as you could realistically assign a p/e ratio to dr. koop dot com or que pasa dot com in 1999.
