Shell Nigeria Shuts In Further 46,000 B/D On Violence

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

LAGOS -- Shell Nigeria Petroleum and Development Co., a unit of the Royal Dutch/Shell Group (RD), said Tuesday 46,000 barrels a day of output at three more crude flow stations in the oil-rich Niger Delta have been shut in.

This is in addition to Saturday's shut-in some 30,000 b/d of output from two flow stations in the region.

Shell regional spokesman Frank Efeduma said by telephone from Warri: "The area became very difficult to operate in and we had to pull our staff."

The Faghara, Atumara and Escravos flow stations were shut down after indigenous Ijaw attacked local Itshekri people, sources said.

Shell withdrew non-essential staff from Jones Creek and Egwa 1 early Saturday because of armed conflict between government troops and rebels.

The violence has disrupted river transport and the company can't maintain supplies, Shell has said.

It couldn't say how long it expects the situation to continue.
