The more likely explanation for the rising support of President Bush is that the US administration has managed to create a sense of inevitability of the Iraq war and the American people are now rallying behind their government and the US Forces.

Here's what I think the France-Germany-Russia axis should have done many, many months ago: publicly support the USA and very tough inspections but inofficially exert strong pressure to only start military action as the very, very last option. Even Chirac is in favor of a 30-day ultimatum now! With some humility of both Bush and Chirac they could have found a compromise.

But Schroeder should not plan on a State visit here in the near future. :>)

Unless they are forced to I doubt that Bush and Schröder will ever meet again, and this is a pity. At least Schröder paid a tribute to Ground Zero while he was still "allowed to"!
