Kristol was a Straussian, I don't know if he is any longer. There are actually Straussian "sects", based on some of the more influential of Strauss's students, and their different emphases. It is true, though, that there is an interest in esotericism, based on a thesis of Strauss's about writer's hiding their ultimate meaning to elude persecution. However, some people make more of it than others. It is also true that Machiavelli is considered to be an important political theorist, although, again, some "sects" are more focused on Machiavelli than others.......
