I think there are a lot of other subsidies that are much more absurd than that of tobacco. And I do think you will get your wish. Pretty soon your health insurance won't pay if you have a heart attack because you're 20 pounds overweight. And they might not go for asthma medications if you live in a heavily industrialized area. I personally think it's ridiculous to harp about smoking when anyone who has ever smoked KNOWS it's not good for you. But it is a "choice" people are allowed to make (for now). I think it would be more productive from a health standpoint to focus on the industries that are polluting the environment and really dirtying the air but it's easier to attack the consumer.

I agree with you about personal responsibility too but that is a dying idea. Too easy to sue someone and get a windfall or blame it on the government. I don't think I'd ever pass jury screening for a case where personal choice leads to a sorry outcome ;o)...
