Sharp, I had to smile when I read, "I've got a great deal of respect for Yergin, but this article seems a bit politically tainted for my taste - but hey, oil is as political as it gets, isn't it?"

I've read many justifications for the assertion that "it's not about oil" including one from a purely political commentator, George Will, and I still haven't heard one that addresses the slightly different issue of whether it's about the "control" of oil. I don't have your expertise and admittedly can't intelligently assess the validity of the numbers they set out, but I can look at the price of oil, the drilling activity and the supply and demand estimates. It seems clear that the industry is waiting for something (missing barrels of oil?) and maybe those barrels are in Iraq. It makes it a little tough to make a jump and commit big in the osx. Ed
