There are plusses and minusses to using index funds. In general, an investor can't do better than the average stock in the index group (or worse, either). I prefer to invest in individual companies that I have selected on the basis of management quality, asset quality, debt, etc. I'm just more comfortable being able to analyze individual companies, even though the theoretical risk of investing in a single company instead of a group might be higher.
