It worked in Germany, Japan, and Italy. It is working in the Eastern bloc countries, for the most part, with our technical aid. Many British possessions, once freed, succeeded in holding onto democracy. Pinochet gave up power in favor of a democracy, as did Franco in Spain. We shouldn't be so sure it will not work, or, at least, that we cannot improve the situation.
In some instances, the Imperialists were right, the subject peoples were better off in colonial regimes than under local tyrants. British rule was generally, though not unfailingly, benign....... |
