Previously, I had attributed this to a particularly unpleasant experience with a California fruit fly inspection back in 58. My paranoia was later reinforced by an openly hostile border official just north of Detroit. <sigh> Then just when I had worked up the nerve to make a quick day trip to Tijuana, a well traveled Maoist forced me to read "The Ugly American." Naturally, I had to cancel the trip for fear of being blown up by a suicide bomber as soon as I got beyond sight of the border guards. But now it's quite clear that I will never set foot in Louisiana again. ...The risk of waking up as gator bait in some bayou, or forced to eat chicken entrails in some Hoodoo cult ritual is simply too great to chance without adequate defensive forces.
