Looks like Chirac is trying to make lemonade out of the basket of lemons he brought to the UN.. NOW he'll "support" the US if Saddam uses chemical weapons that he's not supposed to have, and WOULD NOT HAVE if France had been willing to disarm him.. How friggin' pathetic can you get?
Makes sense to me, Hawk. Seeing as he can't stop the US, now's the time to sidle closer to the US position, while maintaining the front that he really, truly believed that Saddam was being disarmed peacefully, which means he really didn't have much WMDs at all, and the inspectors were finding what they had, and pacific France was leading the charge to keep everything diplomatic, professional and peaceful. Now, when Saddam uses some of those chemical weapons he assured everybody he hasn't got, France can declare they are "shocked, shocked" at having been so deceived, and can sidle even closer to the US, while demanding their share of the post-war contracts.
Works great if you have no shame, and an opponent who places a high priority on the diplomatic harmonies. However, I believe that M. Chirac has misjudged the Bush administration and the mood of the American public. Quite badly. |
