However, I think there are some bigger opportunities down the road as I look at the second wave of the Pew Global Attitudes polling. We will show a very substantial level of democratic aspirations among Muslim people. People in Muslim countries place a high value on freedom of expression, multi-party systems, equal treatment under the law ? in fact, higher than in some nations of eastern Europe. Our upcoming release this spring will detail these aspirations, and show how they exist side-by-side with a desire for a strong role for Islam in governance.

That last sentence. Cognitive dissonance?

Countries with a strong role for Islam in their government have recently shown little regard for "freedom of expression, multi-party systems, equal treatment under the law."

If the experience of Western countries is anything to go by they didn't get those public virtues until after they removed religion from a strong role in government.

This is not surprising since religion is concerned with the state of the soul and those outward manifestations which demonstrate to believers that the correct inward state is being achieved. Thus freedom of expression, etc are not attained because every aspect of life is politicized.

The virtue of modern government is that it de-politicizes lives of ordinary people. Paradoxically, this can give them some political headroom.

The forthcoming Pew report this Spring should be interesting . We'll have to bear in mind, however the Pew Foundations are religious in their over all aims.
