Even if the ability to speak French in the west is irrelevant to life here, the actual skill involved in learning another language will make it much easier for you to pick up other languages later in life when you travel. Je parle Francais un peu und ich spreche ein wenig Deutsch. I vacationed in Brazil and picked up a smattering of Portuguese before I went through attending 8 night school classes. Because of my prior language experience I was able to learn more quickly than other students who could only spika da english. I'm all for bilingualism yet I am also as strong an Alliance supporter as anyone else in Vancouver.
