SARS update
3/19/03 11:29 AM ET

Paul Kedrosky

The SARS outbreak marches on this morning, and the human and economic toll is rising. There were four more deaths, bringing the total to 13. Total cases has risen from 167 to 219 (not counting at least 300 in China), plus nine possibles in the U.S.
In related news, cases have appeared overnight in Australia and Japan, as well as an American child in Thailand. Yesterday immigration officials in Toronto wouldn't inspect an incoming Cathay Pacific flight from Hong Kong. And Thai Airways is now giving free surgical masks to passengers going to and from infected regions. Regional travel associations are reporting 80% cancellations for upcoming trips.

In percentage terms we aren't rising as quickly, leading some to think the outbreak is being controlled; but standard epidemiology would suggest a second wave of infections in a week or so. This remains serious folks, and a hammer blow for UA, Cathay, and others that ply Pacific waters.
