Samsung Targets Plasma-Display Market

Samsung SDI Co. said it is targeting a big increase in sales of plasma-display panels this year. The South Korean company aims to sell 350,000 plasma-display panels this year, up from 63,000 in 2002, citing increased orders from domestic companies and negotiations with suppliers in Europe, China and Japan. Samsung SDI, a maker of cathode-ray tubes used in television sets and computer monitors, said it expects its monthly capacity of 20,000 units to rise to about 40,000 units by the fourth quarter. By 2004, the company expects to produce 105,000 units per month. Samsung SDI has been considering other growth markets as demand for traditional CRTs wanes on the back of a rise in demand for flat panel displays. The company said last week it has earmarked 370.4 billion won ($295.7 million) to build a second plasma display production line to meet demand.
