While driving home I felt disgusted with what's about to happen. Everything on the radio seemed annoying. News reports, music, sports talk, and commercials. I kept flipping the dial. Traffic was pissing me off even though it was moving fast.
Suddenly I came upon a song that struck a chord with me. It was a chord way out of tune.
As I listened to it I realized what an ironic song to hear. Was it some sort of clever peace statement?
The song was Louis Armstrong singing "What A Wonderful World."
I almost began welling up (but I'm no sissy boy). <g> The more I listened the more that song rattled my head. It no longer fit. The words were so far removed. They were so strange. So different from what we've been seeing on the news.
I see trees of green, red roses too, I watch them bloom for me and you; And I think to myself.... what a wonderful world!
I see skies of blue, clouds of white, The bright blessed day,and the dark sacred night; And I think to myself... what a wonderful world! The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky, Are also on the faces of people passing by. I see friends shaking hands saying "how do you do", What they're really saying, is "I love you". I hear babies crying, I watch them grow; They'll learn much more than I'll never know. And I think to myself......what a wonderful world! Yes I think to myself....... what a wonderful world!
I could not stop listening. My soul focus was on that song (with 2% focused where I was between the dashed lines of the parkway). I could feel emotions swirling around me. My wires were cross phasing. Shorting circuits. My brain's micro-chips were sizzling.
<in best robot voice> "DOES NOT COMPUTE. DOES NOT COMPUTE..."
I felt like a computer about to lock up.
Then I started thinking how this was obviously a clever hippy DJ making an anti-war statement. Phucken Aye! This dude was smart. He was showing how fucked up this war is. The dude must be a genius. He was making such a poignant point.
Right?!
Wrong...
I found out at the end of the song I was tuned into the AM station that plays songs from the 20's 30' and 40's...
Just some dweeb in a control room following some sort of format I suppose. After that played Glen Miller's "In The Mood" on what sounded to be an old 78 rpm record...
Those cruel bastards.
