The article you linked pretty much describes the reality of how we got to where we are today.

I still wonder if 9/11 would have happened had America showed up at the International Conference Against Racism in August of 9/11, as a leader rather than with its threat of a boycott and reluctant participation with prescribed guidelines. I mean this is hardly the kind of behavior that'll make a terrorist think twice before acting.

What exactly was the tinderbox incident that put Al Qaeda on those planes? For that matter, where is the US commission to investigate this?

I'm surprised so few people in America actually were able to come to the conclusion that indeed the last Gulf War, putting the US military on Saudi territory was the tinderbox incident for Al Qaeda's organizational growth.

We're left with in the midst of what certainly will become one of the world's greatest tragedies, this war; and we're left in the midst of this war with a twofold dilemma: a) failure of America's media and its measure of reporting; and, b) a failure to lead in a cohesive direction that actually begins to tackle the problems which give rise to terrorism. Odds are matters will, most unfortunately, only get worse.
