The article accurately summarizes the situation. Had the U.S. leaned more on Israel to stop illegal settlements over the past several years, the number of terrorist activities in Israel as well as around the world would be far fewer. It is significant that not a single Arab country has provided any armed forces in this war, in contrast to 1991. It is also significant that not even Turkey has allowed the U.S. to use bases there as a staging ground for invading Iraq. If things go wrong, the U.S. almost alone will be held responsible (financially and otherwise). In the space of hardly more than two years, Bush has succeeded in losing support from the Arab world and most other nations. This is the way to run the government -- into the ground. In looking at historical precedents, one should be mindful of what happened when Sweden decided to overextend itself and attack a good part of Europe to the south. Sweden was so impoverished as a result that for many of its people there was only one way out--move to America. Has Bush thought about what might happen to Americans forced to pay for a war like this? So far he's simply ignored the issue by saying everything will be done in a couple of weeks. Art
