** OT ** I have first hand information on US aims.

My wife is (or was) American, and one of her cousins' families have a significant proportion in the US military. I mean up there. Way up there. Pie eating, milk drinking, soft spoken, highly intelligent Church going, as nice as people you would ever find.

I have nightmares about some of them. What buttons do they push that can cause 20,000 dead at a stroke? At a family memorial last summer, at lunch I had a long talk with one of them about the thrust of US military planning. He basically confirmed part of that article you posted. The US is aiming for zero casualties through extensive use of massive technology. The troops only go in when the war is over.

It's all about keeping morale up on the home front. I pointed out to him that the US was basically making the same mistake as the Romans, who by the final collapse had almost none of their own citizenry in the military. It was all mercenaries who had no real interest in defending Rome.

His sister, who was listening to our conversation, was getting more and more agitated. She finally lost it, and expressed her alarm at such strategies, also pointing out;

"Smart bombs don't recognize hospital crosses."

Indeed. I'm not a religious person, but tonight I say a prayer for all who will die or be injured in the coming days.
