I will make a prediction that within one year, the US will be soliciting France's friendship and downplaying this spat. If they don't get France they don't get reconcilliation in Europe. A similar situation exists with Canada. A 3000 mile border dictates that co-operation and not alienation is sensible. To send Canada away and force Canada to embrace another foreign influence is clearly not good policy. For the US to ignore these facts is to further isolate themselves and imperil their future. As US election year approaches, world rejoining will be seen as important to the American voters as it becomes an issue in the country.

I have faith that the emotions of the moment will dissipate in the months to come and all the reasons that the US for years entertained a balanced foreign policy and diplomatic sensitivity will become clear to this administration.
