jp,
Actually, I'm just now on my first reading of Ayn Rand. It's somewhat of a mystery to me how I could major in Philosophy (from '75 to '79) and never have heard of her, until recently through John Galt and Father Terrence. Yet everyone else seems to have read her, even my doctor, whom I went to see yesterday.
I also found that "Atlas Shrugged" took a little effort to get into, but once there the reading is fascinating. Several aspects of her philosophy strike me.
1. Man can and does reason, and reason is the source of knowledge.
2. Man's ethics, properly, proceed from his reason.
3. Man's purpose is to act, move, achieve, build.
4. Reason, ethics, achievement rest with the individual.
5. Society will benefit only to the extent that the individual is free to benefit himself.
