US Air Strikes in South Iraq, Ground Combat-Reports

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Fox News television reported on Thursday that U.S. forces had launched air strikes and helicopter gunship attacks at ground targets in southern Iraq (news - web sites).

The New York Times said U.S. Marines had been engaged in the first ground combat engagement of the war.

A Fox reporter with the Marines said from what he called a "strategic location" that he witnessed missiles strike areas in southern Iraq as well as helicopter gunships firing at ground targets and the Marines launching artillery into those areas.

The reporter added Iraqis returned some fire but missed the Marines.

The New York Times on its Web site also said the first reported combat engagement of the war occurred when Marine armored vehicles encountered and destroyed two Iraqi armored personnel carriers. The newspaper did not say where the attack took place or mention any casualties.

The attacks came after President Bush (news - web sites) ordered on Wednesday the launch of a war to topple President Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) and destroy its alleged illegal arms programs.
