It obviously is cash or liquid debt instruments (with emphasis on government guarantees in both cases - very important) since with those you are always able to buy tomorrow cheaper than today, since prices are falling (definition of deflation).

How about gold in deflation? Apart from the article on Homestake in the years subsequent to 1929, posted earlier by someone, there are write ups that I recall reading in the early 80's that basically say that historically gold has been a moderately good performer in times when deflation has been really strong but not so good if deflation was just weak.

Does anybody have any articles handy on this subject???
