DJ US Govt Budget/Feb -3:Largest Monthly Deficit On Record

The February deficit of $96.33 billion is the largest monthly deficit ever, according to records that date back to 1975, Treasury said.

For the first five months of fiscal 2003, government receipts totaled $704.79 billion, down from $767.72 billion during the first five months of the previous fiscal year.

Outlays so far this fiscal year totaled $898.72 billion, up from $835.41 billion for the first five months of fiscal year 2002.

In February, the government paid $13.21 billion in net interest on the federal debt. Net interest on the federal debt excludes interest paid on nonmarketable government securities held by federal trust funds, such as Social Security.
