Protesters Clog San Francisco Streets
More Than 175 Arrests Made

POSTED: 9:05 a.m. PST March 20, 2003
UPDATED: 10:55 a.m. PST March 20, 2003

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- At least 175 people have been arrested in San Francisco, where roving bands of protesters are stopping traffic throughout the city.

Protesters are moving from intersection to intersection, often staying one step ahead of police.

Traffic throughout the downtown Financial District has been badly disrupted, and traffic is at a standstill at other points in the city.

Many of the activists are lying or sitting down in the streets and moving newsstands and other large objects into intersections. Some are linking themselves together with pipes.

A large group of those arrested are being held behind barricades on Market Street.

Police in riot gear surrounded some of the protest groups. Authorities used helicopters to keep track of what's going on.

Though the protests are creating chaos, there have been no reports of violence, according to authorities.
