Saddam's TV mission

By Paul Wood
BBC Middle East correspondent

The will to fight of the Iraqi armed forces depends on Saddam Hussein
The Iraqi President, Saddam Hussein, has again appeared on national television in pictures described as having been shot on Thursday.

It seemed it is now a vital part of the Iraqi president's strategy to keep himself in the public eye.

While the bombs were falling again on Baghdad during the night, many Iraqis were in the air raid shelters, listening to state radio and watching state television.

In a secret location somewhere in Baghdad, President Saddam Hussein is shown sitting at a large conference table with his war cabinet, everyone wearing the olive green uniform of the Iraqi army.

The newsreader said the message from the meeting was that the Iraqi people should not be deceived by foreign propaganda about their president - the message was that Saddam Hussein is still very much alive and very much in charge.

'Constant force'

The news broadcast came little more than 12 hours after what the Iraqis said was an attempt to assassinate their leader by missile.

We will resist the invaders

Saddam Hussein's TV speech
For the Iraqi President it was vital to go on television as soon as possible to give the information proving he had survived - namely the exact time and date of the attack.

The will to fight of the Iraqi armed forces and the hundreds of thousands of armed members of the Baath party depends utterly on the personality of Saddam Hussein and the belief that he is still alive.

He has, after all, been a constant force in the lives of Iraqis for 30 years.

You cannot walk five metres in Baghdad without seeing "the photograph", as Iraqis refer to the ubiquitous portrait of their president.

Throughout the day that image has been seen constantly on Iraqi television, while the radio has had a continuous programme of adulatory songs.

The equation is simple - for President Saddam Hussein remaining visible to his people is vital to his fight to remain in power.>> Max.
