Updated 7:00 PM EST.

Shortly after 5 AM Thursday in Baghdad, the U.S. began its attack on Iraq. Launching some 40 cruise missiles into Baghdad, Washington attempted to eliminate members of the Iraqi leadership before launching an all out assault.

After the attacks, Iraq launched several missiles at U.S. troops on the Iraqi-Kuwaiti border. There are no reports of casualties.

There are also reports that Iraq has set oil fields on fire in southern Iraq. The purpose of lighting oil fields ablaze is to fill the sky with thick black smoke, capable of hampering U.S. military logistics.

In the coming days, the Pentagon has announced that it will launch a full scale invasion. U.S. troops are already moving into Iraq on a limited basis.

Protests have erupted across the globe. In Cairo, Lebanon-based network Al Arabiya has shown footage of demonstrations near the U.S. and U.K. embassies. There have been violent clashes between riot police and some 3,000 demonstrators.

In many countries, large groups of protesters have surrounded U.S. embassies. In the United States, large protests are planned for this evening, although protests have already taken place in major cities from the west to east coast.
