Palm: Revenue to Fall Short of Forecasts

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Handheld computer maker Palm Inc. (Nasdaq:PALM - news) on Thursday said it expects to post fiscal fourth-quarter operating loss and sees revenues falling short of analysts average forecasts.

Judy Bruner, chief financial officer of the Milpitas, California said it sees revenues for the quarter, which end in May, in a range of $185 million to $200 million, off 15-20 percent from a year ago. The company sees an operating loss in both hardware division, which makes the devices, and its software unit, which develops the systems that drives them.

Analysts surveyed by Multex had on average forecast fourth quarter revenue of $214 million and a quarterly loss.

Bruner added the projection does not consider a possible slowdown in sales as a result of the U.S. led attack of Iraq (news - web sites) and other global political events.

"There is clearly a risk that consumer and enterprise demand could be negatively impacted," she told analysts on a conference call.

She also said it is possible that the company might take further restructuring actions, following more than $100 million in charges taken in the quarter related to staff reductions and real estate write-downs.
