<<<saddam and his sons already dead?>>>
Unfortunately, US Intelligence has proven to be a somewhat unreliable source of information. Bush seems to be of the opinion that after being terrorized by the US for 12 years, the people of Iraq will forget all about what it's like to lose to the US and welcome another invasion with dewy eyed adoration. Or that a $10 billion fireworks display and handing out leaflets is going to "shock and awe" anyone who wants to take a shot at getting even.
So far Iraq is doing exactly what they would need to do to stand some kind of fighting chance. Disperse, avoid concentrated formations, throw just enough back at us to let us believe there's no real resistance, and play possum until our troops are out numbered 50 to 1 in the biggest street fight in history. Any other view of this war would be foolhardy beyond all comprehension. A siege isn't practical because of the climate, and carpet bombing Baghdad is likely to set off World War III, with Russia, China and France cleaning us out of Iraq the way we cleaned Iraq out of Kuwait. Bush has basically bet the farm he can con Iraq into surrender without a shot being fired, which strikes me as a dumb bet under the circumstances. Iraq is in a situation where a state of near total anarchy, similar to the American Revolution, is likely to be their best defense.
It would save a lot of lives if against all odds Bush were to get lucky, but at this stage of the game Bush stands a lot higher chance of being the first US President in history to be tried for war crimes and executed for high treason. |
